Postal service in Nepal is formally started after the establishment of “Nepal Hulak Ghar” in 1878 A.D. Postal service is regarded as one of the pioneer government service in Nepal which provides both mandatory and commercial services. Expanding the coverage, now, altogether 3997 branch offices are in operation. After becoming the member of Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1956 and Asia Pacific Postal Union (APPU) in 1982 A.D., postal service of Nepal become able to expand its network worldwide.

Categorically; letter, parcel and post box services are put under compulsory services whereas EMS and postal saving bank falls under commercial services. To compete with the private sector and adapt with the rapidly expanding information technology, Nepal Post introduced Postal Internal  
Show more Tracking System (PITS); and mobile postal services in Kathmandu Valley.

Based on the policy framework of Postal Act, 1962 A.D. and its regulation 1963 A.D., Nepal Post delivers and collects postal items at the doorsteps of the public. In addition, it provides modern service like EMS in efficient way competing with private sector. Of course, due to immense change in this sector the postal services have been squeezed but Nepal Post is dedicated on reforms. Since its inception, Nepal Post is moving towards more efficient and effective ways.

General Post Office (GPO)

In order to provide all types of postal services from one point and exchange the postal objects from various countries, GPO has been established in Kathmandu in 1878 A.D. GPO works as the only one Office of Exchange (OE) in Nepal. After the membership of UPU; and introduction of the foreign mail exchange, the role of GPO has further been enhanced. GPO is the major operating level office which works under the Postal Service Department. After 2018 B.S., GPO also accomplishes the services of the then Central Regional Postal Directorate.

Based on the government policies and international norms, GPO delivers both domestic and international services. Within Kathmandu Valley there are four postal counters; 15 Area Postal Offices under which 53 Extra Postal Offices are operating to provide the designated services.
